Heart of Atascadero
Located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, The Carlton Hotel is historic in downtown Atascadero. Ideally located for exploring the lush wine regions of Edna Valley and Paso Robles, the picturesque coastal communities of Pismo Beach, Cambria, Morro Bay, and Cayucos in Central California.
The hotel was built by passion and fine craftsmanship almost a hundred years ago. Robert Bentley the primary ironworker and John Bourgault provided the woodwork. The hotel has gone through a number of renovations and upgrades through the years and has always stayed true and honoured the history and artistry of those that built the original building in the roaring 20s.

1928: A Seed is Sown
Our story begins in 1928, when the vision for a grand haven took root. The Atascadero Development Syndicate, along with Fred Bartholomew, the visionary behind the Atascadero Inn, laid the foundation for a two-story landmark. This initial structure, later named "The Annex," embodied the spirit of community, offering luxurious accommodations alongside convenient retail on the ground floor.

1929-1933: Blossoming into The Carlton
"The Annex" quickly flourished, becoming a premier destination for discerning travelers. In 1930, Nola Tunks and her brother George Clark saw its potential and renamed it "The Carlton," a moniker synonymous with elegance and prestige. The iconic neon sign, still a beacon today, was added by Tunks, further solidifying The Carlton's place as a landmark. This era also saw a flurry of star power grace our halls, with luminaries like Jack Benny and Bette Davis choosing The Carlton as their Central Coast retreat.

1936-1952: A Legacy Forged
The baton of ownership passed to Lewis Sutton and F. Porter Brown in 1936. These astute businessmen not only welcomed guests but also created a welcoming gesture - the famed mosaic champagne glass at the entrance. A symbol of celebration and joie de vivre, it perfectly captured the essence of The Carlton experience. In 1952, Phillip Zarabozo took the helm, leaving a lasting mark with the addition of the clock tower, a prominent feature that continues to define The Carlton's silhouette.

The following decades saw The Carlton evolve through various ownerships. While the grand hotel transitioned into senior housing for a time, its core essence remained.

2005: A Renewed Tapestry
The Carlton Hotel's current owners, with a deep appreciation for its heritage, embarked on a meticulous restoration in 1999. Their dedication brought The Carlton back to its former glory, once again a vibrant haven for travelers and locals alike.

In 2023, The Carlton was acquired by new owners who envisioned a future woven with the rich tapestry of the past. Embracing the Arcadian Guild theme, a celebration of nature's bounty and idyllic experiences, they embarked on a transformative journey.
The Carlton is undergoing exquisite renovations to embrace the Arcadian Guild theme. Guest rooms and common areas will be infused with a spirit that reflects harmony with nature. New culinary experiences await, with the addition of a bar and restaurant, a distillery crafting small-batch spirits, and a speakeasy event space – all designed to tantalize the palate and foster a sense of community.
